CORNELL CONCERT SERIES
The Klezmatics became world-renowned superstars when they erupted out of New York City’s East Village in 1986 to revitalize klezmer for new generations. Their music is steeped in Eastern European Jewish tradition and spirituality, while also incorporating contemporary themes such as human rights, antifundamentalism, and eclectic musical influences—from jazz and punk to Arab, African, Latin, and Balkan rhythms. Over the course of thirty years, they have released nine albums of wild, spiritual, and ecstatically danceable music, forever redefining and transcending traditional labels. In the process, they have garnered numerous accolades, including a GRAMMY Award, a New York Jewish Music Award, a Gay and Lesbian American Music Award, and the German Critics Award (twice), in addition to being featured in theater, film, and television projects.
“Forward-looking, tradition-shattering.” – Pitchfork
“The best band in America…there are no longer any boundaries of any kind. The world is changed.” – Pop Matters

The Klezmatics with Joshua Nelson at the Village Trip Festival
Bringing it all back home to Washington Square with The Klezmatics and Joshua Nelson
Free / Outdoors
Garibaldi Plaza Washington Square Park, New York, NY
Geographically and spiritually, Washington Square has always been the center of the Village. Bohemia’s beating heart. A place to gather, whether to protest or just hang out, often with a guitar. The now-traditional Village Trip concert in the Park, headlined this year by Grammy-winning local heroes The Klezmatics, celebrates Greenwich Village as “a state of mind with no boundaries.”
Klezmer meets gospel at the signature event of The Village Trip! with special guest Joshua Nelson, the “Prince of Kosher Gospel”. The Reverend Billy and the Choir of the Church of Stop Shopping are also on the bill for what promises to be an unforgettable afternoon of music.
“The Klezmatics are thrilled to be a part of this year’s Village Trip Festival,” said Lorin Sklamberg, a founding member of The Klezmatics. “It is especially meaningful since The Village Trip is expanding to include the East Village, whose kinetic energy was so vital to the band’s genesis in the 1980s. We are also beyond excited for the opportunity to present Brother Moses Smote the Water, our ecstatic collaboration with the mighty Prince of Kosher Gospel,’ Joshua Nelson, as part of our Washington Square Park debut.”
No tickets needed – just grab your dancing shoes and shimmy on down to Garibaldi Plaza in Washington Square Park for an afternoon of great music and good fun!
Free - suggested donation $10 to The Village Trip.
